Scrum is a software development methodology in which a product is developed over iterative cycles. Scrum is a specific methodology of agile development utilizing phases of development called sprints. Stakeholders and designers meet after each increment to discuss what has occurred, re-evaluate requirements and determine priorities for the next sprint. Scrum relies on a small team working closely together to develop a product, however due to available technologies, the scrum methodology can work successfully with a distributed team (one in which all parties are not co-located).
The scrum development method is based on working in sprints, which are short periods of time in which the team is able to produce incremental project deliverables. The Scrum methodology utilizes three main roles, the ScrumMaster, who facilitates the group, the Product Owner, who represents the business unit that will use the software and the Team, made up of software developers. Before each sprint, there is a planning meeting with the entire group involved in the project in order to review what was accomplished in the previous sprint and what will be accomplished in the next. Each sprint has a specific timeframe and if all the work is not finished, it goes into the "backlog" where the group can pull requirements for future sprints.
